Rinoa was seated in the Infirmary, smiling at Loire as she tapped the case, glad to see him not responding to her other than blinking or wriggling. "Hey, sweetie. How you feeling?" She smiled at her son, pressing her nose to the case.

Squall walked into the Infirmary, something clearly on his mind. He frowned and moved over to Rinoa, turning a chair around to straddle it, sitting next to her, looking in on Loire.

Rinoa leaned against Squall, smiling softly. "He looks good, huh?" She gave a slight giggle of pure happiness, hugging his arm a little.

Squall gave a half-smile. "Yeah, he looks great..." He frowned slightly, turning his gaze away. "Rin... can... can we talk?"

"Sure we can. What's on your mind, hm?" She smiled at him, shifting in her seat to set her gaze on his face rather than Loire's.

Squall shifted in his own seat, folding his arms on the back of it. "I um... I wasn't completely honest with the bruise..."

Rinoa frowned slightly, looking at his eyes. "What...? What does that mean?" She tilted her head a little, resting her hands on her lap.

"I..." Squall sighed, hiding his face against his arms. "I only lied because I didn't want you to worry, Rin. I wanted to protect you..." A long pause. "I... I'm gonna die..."

Rinoa choked slightly, looking to Loire before standing, knocking her chair over as tears ran down her face. She moved around the chair, heading for the door. She couldn't believe him. It wasn't true. It just... couldn't be.

Squall sighed and got up from his own chair, running after Rinoa. "Rin... wait..." He pleaded.

"No... you're wrong... you can't be dying..." She looked up at him with eyes full of tears, her cheeks damp.

Squall reached out to wipe those tears away, sighing softly. He wanted to kiss her, but he didn't want to risk passing this illness on if Rinoa didn't already have it. "I'm so sorry."

Rinoa sighed softly, curling her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. "It's not fair. Isn't there a cure or something? Anything?"

Squall sighed again and stroked Rinoa's hair. "There's no cure. But I'll look all over Gaia until I find one, Rin. I'll do my damn best to beat this."

"I guess you... you caught it from Balthier, huh?" She nuzzled his chest a little, sighing softly. "I'll do what I can to help... I can't do much..."

Squall ran his finger down Rinoa's back a little. "Just be here to tell me you love me. That's all I need you to do."

"I love you, Squall." She sighed softly, nuzzling his chest a moment longer before looking up at him, cupping his cheek. "I love you." She repeated softer.

Squall swallowed hard, forcing a smile for her. "That's all I need to hear. I'll find a way to cure this thing. Mine isn't as bad at Balthier's yet. I have longer to beat it. I'll find a cure so you, Loire and I can have that house just like we talked about."

"Okay... I'll hold down things here while you look, alright?" She smiled back, just as forced. "We'll be waiting for you."

"Is that a promise, Rin?" Squall asked, keeping his gaze locked on hers.

She gave a nod, smiling up at him, rubbing away her tears. "It's a promise, Squall. Loire and me... we'll wait forever for you."

Squall stroked her tears away gently, returning the smile. "I love you so much, Rin."

"I love you too, Squall." She curled her arms tighter around him, burying her face in his chest. "I always will."

Squall pressed a kiss against his gloved hand, before pressing it to Rinoa's head. "You should get back to the little one, he'll be wondering where his mommy is."

Rinoa gave a slight nod. "Go find yourself a cure, Squall. I got plans for the three... four of us, remember." She smiled up at him before heading towards Loire. As she did, a single white feather landed at Squall's feet.

Squall watched Rinoa move away before crouching to pick up the feather, running his fingers over it gently, kissing it, before pocketing it in his pants pocket.

Rinoa seated herself at Loire's side again, hugging her knees to her chest with a soft sigh. She had to be strong now. For the boys in her life.
